UPDATE! IMPORTANT! – DO NOT INSTALL THIS VERSION AT THIS POINT IF YOU WANT TO USE THE OFFICIAL OTA RELEASE OF 2.2 FOR THE DROID X THAT IS OUT NOW!  YOU WILL HAVE TO FLASH BACK TO 2.1 USING THE SBF FILE IN ORDER TO UPGRADE TO THE OFFICIAL 2.2 RELEASE!

Ok, finally after a lot of trial and error we have this figured out.  You’re beginners guide to installing the Froyo update.

NOTE: To start with if you want to be rooted after upgrading, you HAVE to be rooted BEFORE installing the update.  If you need to get rooted, check out our guide here.  Once you’re rooted either follow the instructions below for rooted users, of if you’re not rooted and don’t want to be simply jump to the non-rooted users instructions below.

NOTE 2: If you’ve installed Koush’s Droid X Bootstrapper application for his customer recovery you CANNOT apply this update with these instructions.  There is a few added steps I will upload a separate walkthrough for shortly.

For rooted users:

You want to move a file using Root Explorer (which is a paid app from the market place, simply search for Root Explorer, purchase and install)

Open Root Explorer, and you’ll see a list of folders on your phone, just like on a computer.

Navigate to the system folder and tap it to open it.

Scroll to the bin folder and tap it to open it.

Now tap the button in the upper right corner of the application that says “Mount R/W”

Find the file called SU.

Long press on it and select “Move”

Now go back to the system folder in Root Explorer using the back key.

Find a folder called xbin, and tap it to open it.

Now click the “Move” button at the bottom of the screen to successfully move the SU file.

Now up in the right hand corner of the screen the button should say “Mount R/O”, tap it.

Now close out of root explorer and continue with the instructions for non rooted users as they following steps will be identical.

For non-rooted users:

Download the Froyo leak file here.

Once downloaded, connect your phone to your computer using your USB cable, and select USB Mass storage as the connection option by pulling down the notification area and tapping on the USB entry.

Now copy the Update.zip file to the root of your SD card (meaning not inside any folder on your SDcard, so if your SD card shows up at drive it, the file should be in E:\update.zip)

Once the update.zip file is in the root of your SDcard simply reboot into recovery mode. To do this, hold down the Home key on your phone and then press the power key.  Keep them both held down until you see a triangle with and exclamation point in it, and a little android guy.  Once you see that screen let go of the home and power buttons, and press the search button.  This will bring up a menu.

In this menu, one of the options is “Apply sdcard:Update.zip”

Using the volume keys to scroll up and down, scroll down to that option.

At this point simply press the camera button to actually select “Apply sdcard:update.zip”

Sit back and let it install your Froyo goodness!
