First Custom Rom Hits Droid X!

Birdman delivered yesterday as promised with the first custom rom for the DroidX, titled FlyX.  This rom is in RC status meaning there WILL BE BUGS.  So far a known issue is the physical search key not functioning properly, however most people are not having many issues with it for being a release candidate.

A couple of notes before taking the plunge on this.

  1. You MUST be rooted to do this
  2. You MUST be running the leaked 2.2 version that is in the wild (or you can get it from us here)
  3. You have to install the Droid X Custom Bootstrap app, available from the market for $2.00
  4. You must have Rom Manager installed, available from the market for free, or a premium version for $3.99
  5. By doing this your forfeit your chance to receive the official OTA Froyo update from Verizon and Motorola

With all that said, you could always roll back to the stock 2.1 on your phone and then get the OTA update that way. We have a guide for that as well, here.

Please note, if you’ve already installed the 2.2 leak, you’re good there.  If you already had the Bootstrap app installed, especially if you downloaded it from Koush’s website, and you get an error reading your SD card when you boot into recovery, go to the market and download the updated Bootstrap app, it resolved the issue for most users.

So with all the warnings and heads up out of the way, if you’re ready to dive in and install this Rom, here you go!

Once you’re on Froyo, rooted, and have the Bootstrap and Rom Manager apps installed, proceed with the following.

  1. Open the bootstrap app and tap “Bootstrap Recovery”
  2. Allow SU permission when prompted, and then it will flash that it’s complete real quick.
  3. Go into Rom Manager now.
  4. Tap the button up top that says “Flash Clockwork Recovery Mod”
  5. It will ask you if you want the Milestone or Droid X, obviously choose Droid X here.
  6. It will then prompt for SU permissions if it’s the first time you’re using the app, so allow it.
  7. Then it will say Download complete for Clockworkmod Recovery.
  8. Now tap Download Rom
  9. Tap Birdman
  10. Now tap FlyX V0.1 RC1, then tap Download when prompted.
  11. This will download the rom to your phone.
  12. Once the download is complete, you’ll be prompted to Backup Current Rom, and Wipe Data/Cache.  It’s highly recommended you do both of these! ( Don’t say we didn’t warn you if you don’t!)
  13. Once you make your selections and tap Ok, your phone will power down and reboot itself.
  14. It should now boot up into the recovery console and proceed with first backing up your rom, then wiping the data and cache partitions (if you chose those options) then it will install the actual rom.
  15. Once it’s done installing you may have to select reboot now from the recovery console using the volume keys to scroll up or down, and the camera button to select it.
  16. You’re phone will then boot up (which may take a while the first time, so be patient!) and then you’ll be running FlyX!

Let us know if you run into any problems, and remember, as stated this is a release candidate so it will have a few bugs in it, but the only way to fix them is have people test it!

Enjoy!
