Cricket Wireless Gets First Android Phone

Cricket just opened up pre-orders today for it’s first Android smartphone. The Zio, by Kyocera,  will be Cricket’s first entry into the world of Android, being sold for $249 ($229 online through mycricket.com) and is considered an entry level Android device.

This phone is sporting a 3.2 MP camera, a 3.5 inch touch screen, measures in at 4.6 x 2.3 x .48 inches weighing only 3.7 ounces.  The phone is powered by a 600 MHz MSM7227 processor from Qualcomm.  It’s running Android 1.6, and Kyocera says it plans to update to an Android 2.x version in the future, but I wouldn’t count on that until they see how well this thing even sells.

It’s also lacking the ability to connect to wi-fi from what I read in the specs which is another minus compared to other smartphones.  So why would anyone want one of these?  Simple, they can’t afforded the bloated data plan pricing on top of the other monthly access fees from a contract service from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. With Cricket, as it’s always been, this will be a no contract, flat monthly fee phone, coming in at $55 a month for unlimited calling, texting, and web.  That alone is an enticing offer considering it’s nearly half of any major competitor that you have to sign a 2 year contract with.

Another reason to hop on the Android bandwagon!
